Nelson County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with a population of 14,775 according to the 2020 census. The county seat is Lovingston, and Nelson County is part of the Charlottesville, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
At the time the English began settling Virginia in the 1600s, the area that is now Nelson County was inhabited by a Siouan-speaking tribe known as the Nahyssan, who were likely connected to the Manahoac. Over time, European settlers displaced the indigenous population, and the county's history was shaped by its position in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Nelson County was established in 1807, carved out of Amherst County, with its government formed the following year. It was named in honor of Thomas Nelson Jr., a signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, who served as Governor of Virginia in 1781. A previous county of the same name was also named after him, which became part of Kentucky when it separated from Virginia in 1792.
Today, Nelson County is a charming and historic area, offering visitors a glimpse into the history and culture of Virginia. The Oak Ridge Railroad Overpass is a historic bridge located near the town of Shipman in Nelson County, Virginia. This impressive Pratt truss bridge was built in 1882 by the Keystone Bridge Company and remains an excellent example of 19th-century bridge engineering. It consists of a single span through Pratt truss with two wooden beam approach spans. The span length is 100 feet, while the approach spans are 19 feet in length. The bridge carries VA State Route 653 over the Norfolk Southern Washington District, a busy railway line that is part of the former Southern Main Line that ran between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta.
The Oak Ridge Railroad Overpass has been recognized for its architectural and historical significance and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
